Gustav Mahler’s “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” is his first song cycle, composed between 1884 and 1885. The lyrics for the songs were written by the composer himself, drawing inspiration from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”, a collection of German folk poetry that was one of Mahler’s favorite books. The songs are indeed powerful pieces, not only in their musical style but also in the characteristic interplay between life and the creative process that is typical of Gustav Mahler. The five songs by Alma Mahler, composed between 1899 and 1910, have stood the test of time. Each of the five songs is based on a poem that Mahler liked. Alma Mahler’s songs passionately explore themes of love and loss, reflecting her personal life.
